Matjaz Lemut's Story

"Tilia Estate is a private wine cellar owned and run by us, my wife Melita and myself Matja. We are both University trained vintners and enologists who have had many international experiences, especially from Switzerland and California.

It is located in Slovenia´s south-western Vipava Valley, just 70 miles from Venice (Italy). We established our vineyard in 1994 and launched our first vintage in 1996.Our vineyard is called TILIA, which is Latin name for linden tree, that grows on the estate.

We met the Naked wines team and the Archangels and Angels at a Slovenian winetasting at the Embassy in London. We were so very happy when we were voted as the favourite wines of the night. There was lots of really great producers and wines there at the tasting so to come out on top was a big moment for us.

We really hope that you enjoy the wines. The way that Naked sells the wine is very interesting to us, please do write to us and tell us what you think of our wines.

We have written a little timeline of how our wines came alive, please read below for more of our story!

1987 Matja? Lemut in the second year of Ljubljana University, department for agronomy, is assigned practice on a vine-growing farm ZAHNER in Switzerland during summer. In the years 88, 89, 90, there are continuous practices for one or two months, in the time of winter cutting, summer work and harvest.

1988 - Melita (today my wife) joins in on those practices.

1990 we spend the summer and autumn together in a cellar Raymond California.

In December 1990, we decide to buy an estate without any vineyards in a home land of Vipava Valley. (3 ha of land and a wrecked house). We decided for a life in the countryside.

1991, we both graduated and until 1992, paying off the purchase of the estate by working in Switzerland; Melita in the Vitoreco - Nestle Research institute, and Matja? at the wine estate Zahner.

1992 we planted our first hectare of vineyards over the distance (Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir), and in December, their first daughter Nika is born.

1993 -1994 we plant 2 more hectares and start with the renovation of the building. In December, their son Gal is born.

1996 was our first harvest and they decide for a production of fresh white wines.

1998 there are barrique barrels made from slavonian oak in the cellar for the first time. Our youngest daughter Ajda is born.

2000, we plant the second vineyard (3 ha). For fun we also plant a small plantation of cherries. First aged red wines; Rubido and Pinot Noir arrive on the market. ZLATA TILIA (TILIA GOLD) is created.

2001 our wines are exported to USA for the first time, and can be found in the restaurant of the UNOAmericans name the fresh white wines with a yellow label SUNSHINE TILIA

2006, French barrels are used in the production of Pinot noir for the first time. Jancis Robinson visits.

2008 they build a new barrique cellar with a capacity of 500 barrels.Tom Stevensen visits and proclaims Pinot noir 2006 to be the greatest red wine he has tasted in Slovenia. Melita enrols for a PhD degree at the University of Nova Gorica, where she also works as directress of BSc. Study Programme of Viticulture & Enology.

2010, their wines are exported to USA for the tenth time and Pinot gris is declared to be the best-selling gastronomic Pinot Gris in Slovenia. "

Comment on: Tilia Estate Rubido 2007

Can anyone confirm what grapes this wine is made of? It claims to be a bordeaux blend on the front page, but in "The Facts" it mentions Syrah, grenache etc. I assume this is a mistake - can someone confirm?

Comment on: Tilia Estate Pinot Gris 2010

Have to say this hasn't replaced the SB as my favorite recent wine but it came pretty close, agree with others I prefer this to Italian pinot, slightly more complex, if you want something different than run of the mill pinot gris then this is for you.

TILIA estate news 2
After the harvest the vineyards are getting quiet. Up to the first frost there is almost now work. We have to take a look, perhaps we forgot some harvest boxes or , scissors or empty bottles harvest workers left in the vineyards.
The middle of November is normally just right time to start winter pruning. Basically the aim of pruning is to keep control of the size and quality of next crop and keeping the right vigour of the vine.. There are many training systems of the vines in the vineyards, which determine the way how to prune. . The vine get a cluster on the shoots which are coming from one year old wood.- One year old branches which are growing from the head of the vertical trunk is the only wood we left after pruning. We call it a cane. It has 3 to 9 buds, potential 3 to 9 shoots or 6 to 18 clusters.. That training system we know us a single guyot.. Most of our vineyards are trained by this system.. Each cane is normally fixed horizontal on the wire So winter pruning is combined by two manual works; pruning and binding. According variety and training system a worker can pruned from 200 to 400 vines a day ( 8 hours).. The hardest work is to prune cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay having very strong vigour and hard wood.
We have started pruning this year in second week of November. First in our biggest vineyard Potoče where are 18 000 plants and on the end ( last week ) our Yellow muscat vines in Plače. Peter and Stefan, our workers this week started cane binding . They stopped today because we got real winter now. For Vipava valley that means around minus three and big wind called Burja. Today it reached 160 km / hour of the speed, what is quite normal for this time. It will get even stronger on Thursday and Friday, up to 210 km/ hour. But we are used to have it and nature us well... The children are happy because they do not have school next few days …..

Matja˛

Really enjoyed this. It had me giggling which is always a good sign. As with the Pinot Gris, I had no idea what to expect from a Solvenian Sauvignon. The nose offers fresh fruit and peach blossom, and hint of something tart. It's the taste in the palate that set me off - pear drops and peach yoghurt. Unmistakeably... Mrs Tim it has to be said agreed, and she is ALWAYS right. The sweetness of the fruit is well balanced with acidity. Not quite the lip smacking nature of some New World Sauvignon Blanc, but a well rounded does of tartness which is thoroughly pleasant.

As the blurb suggests, well paired with a risotto. The wine cuts through the rich creaminess of the dish.

Will definitely buy again.
