Just joined the site, just got Jamies British Food book for my 63rd birthday....today cooking British Empire Chicken (had the kedgeree last night) with Bombay Tatties...or for the PC Brigade "Pommes de Terre a la Mumbai"........

Chalk Hill Penance 2008

Absolutely fabulous wine this one and perfect for good meaty dishes. Extremely fruity and indulgent, a little more expensive than an everyday glugger but WELL worth the extra especially with cashback. The frenzy on NW at the Penance launch was a sight to behold. If you need a reason to vote for Jock in the Winemaker Of The Year 2010 then this one may tip the scale, so go vote and get us another gem in the making! Cheers Recommended by Phil Hardy

Canepa Novisimo Merlot 2009

Try this new Novisimo Merlot from Winemaker Max Weinlaub, it's a new launch and is available both as a case and individually by the bottle. It's great with food and as just an easy drinker, I tried with both with equally good results. The food was Derbyshire reared buffalo burgers which are rich and very lean, onions and a scotch bonnet chilli sauce. I thought they really complimented each other well. To drink on it's own there are the black cherry and pepper flavours, but I also found dark chocolate & coffee beans with (strangely) a hint of mulled wine type spiciness.
